{|{|{| There is a blooming interest in locally grown cut flowers -- from fresh produce markets and pick-your-own farms to weddings and other special events. This growing trade can strengthen and compliment the sale of locally grown fruits, vegetables, and herbs. Flowers can provide a different, additional source of income. “Flowers are an opportunity for the small farmer to diversify and sell more product to existing customers,” said Debra Prinzing, author of Slow Flowers and The 50 Mile Bouquet (both St. Lynns Press). A large majority of flowers currently sold in the U.S. are imported from South America, where use of harsh chemicals and toxic pesticides are regularly practiced. Locally grown flowers are often more fragrant than imported varieties, because they have not endured long distance shipping. They are also fresher, and will last longer in a vase. In addition, flowers attract honey bees and other beneficial insects, which can be helpful pollinators for any farm production. The three most popular florist crops are carnations, roses, and chrysanthemums. Specialty cut flowers are other varieties that can be placed in a bouquet or vase and provide color, texture, and greenery. In addition to zinnias, sunflowers, orlaya, gomphrena, etc., specialty cuts include ornamental grasses, herbs (such as basil or dill), foliage, and grains.
